RAM comes in many different kinds of configurations and memory types-and runs at many different speeds, as well. Before you upgrade, you need to know how to spot the different types. Pictured in these steps are the different types of RAM, including the older-style DIPs and newer SIMMs and DIMMs. Step modules 1: Dual Inline Packages (DIPs) If you have an older computer, it might use an older kind of memory called a dual inline package (DIP). DIPs plug directly into their own sockets on the motherboard. It''s difficult memory to find DIPs today because they''re old. They come in pairs or sets of eight. Step 2: Single Inline Memory Modules SIMMs (Single Inline Memory Modules) plug into long, matching sockets on your motherboard. SIMMs have more capacity than DIPs. Typically, a motherboard has several banks of SIMM sockets into which you plug SIMMs. SIMMs come in 30-pin and 72-pin formats. 30-pin modules SIMMs usually memory have less capacity than 72-pin, and often come with capacities of 256K, 1MB, 2MB, and 4MB. 72-pin SIMMs come in 1MB, 2MB, modules 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, and 32MB. Step memory 3: Dual Inline Memory Modules
There are two types of cache in your computer: level 1 and level 2. The level 1 cache (also known as modules L1 cache) is inside the CPU itself, and you really have no control over quantity and speed. The level 2 cache (also known as L2 cache) are all external to the chip. The L2 cache on the nside the CPU package (though still external to the CPU chip itself). Those systems run on motherboards memory with modules a variety of core logic chipsets. However, some of them are designed so that the L2 cache only works with the first 64MB of RAM in your memory system. The two main culprits are the chipsets—two modules and memory of the most common chipsets available. Now, 64MB is a lot of RAM, so it''s not like your system is somehow crippled modules and memory (at least, not for gaming). But you should be aware that in the case of boards using these chipsets, more is not necessarily better. motherboards with the chipset probably can cache up to 512KB of RAM, but a few motherboard makers cheaped modules and memory out and left out a critical TAG RAM chip modules and—you guessed it—those boards can only cache the first 64MB or RAM. To my knowledge, boards that use the can cache more than 64MB, but be wary.
